Recently a problem troubled me for days. iMovie won't import MP4, why? Sometimes, I can edit MP4 file in it successfully, but it also happens MP4 cannot added into iMovie. What's the solution?

As some guys explained, iMovie only accepts MP4 file which contains MPEG-4 and H.264 codecs. While, the audio, subtitle or other media source that embed in MP4 might have different codecs. In this case, we cannot judge the video format by examining the file extension name only. Then, providing that you want to add MP4 to iMovie, the common advice is to convert your MP4 to iMovie preferred format like Apple InterMediate Codec .mov, which will save you both time and trouble, and all you need is to drag the result videos for prompt editing.

How to Convert MP4 for Editing in iMovie smoothly

Step 1: Download, install and run Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac, and then click the “Add” button to load the .mp4 videos.

The program is an easy-to-use Mac MP4 converter for you, which can help you change MP4 into a different format like AIC .mov with least quality loss. You should then be able to import the new file into iMovie with smooth editing without any trouble. It will ensure a perfect MP4 file importing, playing and editing workflow with iMovie 08/09/11.

Step 2: You can choose iMovie/FCE — > Apple InterMediate Codec(AIC) (*.mov) as the output format. The output video can be imported to iMovie 11/iMovie 09/iMovie 08 directly.

Tip: Click the Settings icon to adjust video and audio parameters on the Profile Setting as you need to get the best quality video.

Step 3: Simply click the "Convert" button to start converting and everything else will be automated. If you have added quite a bunch of video files, it would take some time to convert. In such case, you can click Option and tick the box “Shut down the computer after conversion”.

You're done. Now your MP4 files will be converted into Apple InterMediate Codec MOV files ready to be imported to iMovie beautifully.

I got some MP4 files from Gopro Hero4 Black edition, iMovie can't ingest the videos. Based on your post, it may lies on the video, audio codec it contained. I've tried to my MP4 to iMovie most compatible format AIC with Brorsoft's video converter mac. Big success. Thanks.
